  1. Thanks for noticing that Gravel - I added that info. Yes, this was pretty much my life last week so I know the subject well. The email thing was actually hard for me cuz I moved, and couldn't remember whether I had used the new one or the old for 2 of my accts. Btw, only ONE of my bank accounts got wiped out.....and I recovered all 3 chars. Thats not bad considering how it could have turned out.
  2. Account Recovery Guide: What to do when you get hacked! It's every players worst fear: you log in like any other day only to get the dreaded message: Invalid account id or password. You log in again. Again, the message appears: Invalid account id or password. You find yourself locked out of your rs account and the anger sets in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This guide is primarily to help pple get their information together in case of a hack and basic steps into getting it back with their bank intact. 1.Take preliminary steps to prevent a hacker's potential success. a.) Write down (not store on your computer) your membership id. Thats the number they give you when you sign up. For P2P players this shows up on your billing statements so is easier to obtain. b.) Set recovery questions (and don't store the answers on your computer.) Each account should have different answers to the questions, i.e. What is your father's middle name? Godzilla. That way you don't have the same answers for recovery questions on all of your accounts. c) Keep a list of every password and bank pin you have ever had for each account. Again, keep this info off your comp. Jagex will ask for them as you have to PROVE that you are the rightful owner of the account! d) The password recovery will ask for the e-mail you registered with when you started the account as a form of initial id (they will not send anything out to the e-mail, however). This is another thing to keep in your records which are off the computer and if a safe location. (Thanks Gravel for that addition) e) Log into every account you have at least once a week. A bank pin can be changed in 7 days. A hacker stealthly logs in, puts in for a pin change and, after 7 days, changes your pass takes your entire bank. It happened to me. f) Keep a bank pin on every account you own. Actually look at the upper left-hand corner of the splash page prior to getting into your bank - it will tell you if you have applied for a new pin. If you haven't and it says you have-- red alert! Change it immediately to a new number with a 7 day delay. g) Get into a habit of putting every item off your char and into your bank before you log out. h) Most importantly: run updated virus scans daily, keep a valid firewall up, check your registry/files for anything unusual. The Masors computer section here is a fantastic resource. Use it. 2. When you discover you have been locked out of your account: a) Try not to panic. Don't go to recover your password or reset recovery questions till you have thoroughly scanned and cleaned out your computer. If you need help identifying what the keylogger is or what was the cause of your hack-- take a picture of your registry (google Belarc for an easy way of doing this.) Post your registry picture on a new thread in the Masors comp section. Our amazing resident computer experts will assist you. b.) Only after your computer is 100% free of any keyloggers: go to password recovery, fill in all the info about your account. At the bottom of the page you can put in any other info that helps prove that you are the actual owner of this account. Put in date/time of your last log-in, what is in your (hopefully locked up tightly) bank, the date you started the account (put in a rough date if you don't actually know,) who is on your buddy list...whatever. Stick to facts that they can use, not a hysterical "I got hacked and this is my account" rambling message. c) Carefully write down the account recovery numbers they give you. These are super important as it is your only way of tracking your inquiry. On the second page they require you to exactly re-type these numbers. Also, on that second page is another section where you can offer further information/explaination. Often the message box doesn't show up-- you have to click on some typing to get it to show. Go slow. If you miss it there is no way of going back and getting the screen a second time without going through the entire process again. You miss an opportunity to show further proof of ownership. So, go slow and carefully....be thorough and factual. d) Give Jagex a day or two or three to sort out your request. If you are turned down for insufficient information just repeat the process -- trying to add anything you can to prove you are the rightful owner. Be persistant but not annoying. e) When you log in again, look at the first page (that annoying full-screen log-in page.) It will give you the ip address of the last placed logged in from, i.e., the hackers ip addy. **Remember- your bank pin only lasts 7 days if someone puts in for a new one. If a hacker resets it while he/she has control of your account you have a very limited time to getting both your account and bank back. Jagex IS on the players side but obviously they to be careful in handing out accounts to pple who give vague information/proof of ownership. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The short list: Keep written down in a safe place: All passwords, All pins, last log-in date, membership agreement number, last log in date/time, and correct recovery questions. Lastly, I hope is that no one here ever has to use this guide to recover their accounts. Above all, good luck. Scan daily. Also, if anyone gets keylogged I would suggest changing your password to this forum.
